Italian holidays rank among the best for summer vacationers. It’s not surprising given Italy’s history, culinary delights, deep culture, spectacular scenery and of course the world class wines. For a true Italian experience, many visitors stay in the countryside, exploring the wonderful rustic villages that have put Italy on the map for its old-world appeal. There are many beautiful Italian villages to choose from, so it can be a little overwhelming in the planning stage of your holiday but I have put together my top 4 below to help you choose:
SAN GIMIGNANO

As one of the most memorable regions of Italy, Tuscany is home to the wonderful San Gimignano. This little village, at the heart of the great wine lands of Italy, is noted for its narrow streets, snug squares, and of course the old towers from centuries ago. Though these towers are nice spots for photographs, they were in fact built for defensive purposes against rival families in the same area. An ideal place for a short escape, to enjoy some traditional pasta and glass of the finest red, gazing out at the unforgettable sunsets. This place does get quite busy in summer time.
POSITANO

Only one hours of a drive from Naples, Positano village is built off one of the most scenic routes in the world, being the unmissable Amalfi Coast. Being coastal, Positano has a nice relaxing beach and inviting restaurants, but the village is best appreciated when viewed from afar: as you’ll then see just how it clings onto the surrounding mountains and the magnificent Moorish-style houses in an upward layering effect which is why it’s one of my favourites.
MATERA

In the south of Italy in Basilicata, famously known as “Città dei Sassi”, or the city of stones, lies Matera. UNESCO deems it as a world heritage site for its unique beauty. The beautiful town of Matera is simply one of the ancient wonders of the world and has been featured in many Hollywood movies. It gets much of its attention from the sassi, being the ancient caves, acting as homes carved in the hilly rocks around.
RAVELLO

Last but not least. A simply charming village 350 meters over sea level is Ravello, symbolising the music of nature. Its charming landscape, magnificent monuments and its stunning vistas drew many European artists who visited the place looking to be inspired. In the modern day, Ravello is renowned for its classical concerts alfresco in the summer, out in the patrician villas with beautiful gardens, the Rufulo and Cimbrone, each towering towards the sun. If you are into just relaxing and wandering around, check out near the San Pantaleone cathedral or go browsing for some colourful ceramics.
